The fast and furious pace of parenting can show us how to be slow and responsible.

The other night I was at Whole Foods shopping for the week. I admit I don’t bring a reusable shopping bag or bags with me to the market on a regular basis (almost never). While I meandered, I noticed a dad shopping alone with his maniac 3 year-old son doing what kids do at that age. This child was screaming, climbing out of the shopping cart and dominating the soundtrack at the market on a quiet Sunday evening. Dad shushed him, made excuses, gave him treats, cracked up. The kid was the side show at the market and the only one making so much noise. But that didn't stop dad from doing the right thing.I was checking out and watching this duo as the child was doing gymnastics in the cart while the dad patiently bagged his groceries in a about 6 reusable bags. He didn’t pick up the pace and let the bagger do it for him with brown paper bags like I did sans kids or a frenzied life to justify this now looking lazy shopping habit. He managed to slowly bag the goods in the canvas and prevent any accidental mishaps or creative nose dives from the cart. Hats off to parents with so many hands full, showing us (me) the way to parent the planet even with a full plate.
