Yes In My Backyard- Milken Institute Global Conference, a Los Angeles super nova think tank just finished its 17th year producing the most relevant content and attracting the brightest stars across the human acheivemnt spectrum. With the world full of complex geopolitical, social, and economic challenges that appear insoluble to many -- and in a world full of conferences that discuss them without driving change -- the Milken Institute Global Conference is unique. For the 17th year, Global Conference brought together some of the world's leading thinkers, visionaries and decision-makers to help find solutions to these critical issues. Part of the mission of On Slow Life is sustainability and we all need to exchange ideas and solutions to sustain our health, economic vitality and responsibility, environmental resourcefulness and political innovation.
Earlier this week, more than 3,000 people from around the world converged -- senior leaders with the mind and the means to create positive action -- gathered at the Beverly Hilton for four days of intense discussion ending today. More than 650 speakers, including major investors, CEOs, government officials, scientists, educators, philanthropists, and journalists, made 140 sessions come alive. The wide-ranging panel topics included: the worldwide water crisis which I will have a clip at the end to highlight that crisis. Other topics included the future of Wall Street, the promise of impact investing, the four ways stem cells will change medicine, Africa's emerging energy landscape -- and dozens more.
The team at Milken curates the most compelling speakers and topics, please see list of program and speakers here .
I attended a panel moderated by Deepek Chopra. As a long time fan of his accessible and complex concepts yet totally digestible and inspired delivery on mind body wellness, the topic was:
The Mind and the Universe- Deepak Chopra and Friends on Unleashing the Power of Your Brain with:
Marilyn Schlitz, CEO, Worldview Enterprises, LLC; Senior Fellow and President Emeritus, Institute of Noetic Sciences
Rudolph Tanzi, Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School; Vice Chair, Neurology Research, Massachusetts General Hospital
Robert Lawrence Kuhn, Host and Executive Producer, "Closer To Truth"; Chairman, The Kuhn Foundation.
Excerpts from the panel discussion:
Looking at the mind through emotions, receptors in different parts of our body chemicals messengers from the mind. Where this person lives never shuts up. Peptides and radiance immune system circulating nervous system stomach cells speaking literally gut makes same chemicals when your brain thinks. Think with your gut more. The cells are the same as your brain without all of the unwanted chatter. To make it simple, go with your gut.
Is The Brain a Verb or a Noun - A verb According to Dr. Tanzi and Deepak Chopra the brain is a verb.
Are genes verbs or nouns?
Only 5 % of disease is related to the penetration of inheriting that gene. if you inherit that gene, for most age related diseases if you look at various gene mutations 5 % are inherent but 95% is lifestyle and gene to gene reaction. Epi genetics have become clear in the last 10-15 years if you are dealt a certain deck of genes which presidpose you to a condition, you have control with your lifestyle, diet and activity of those genes. Can't change the sequence or DNA but you can change the activity up and down simply how you live your life.
Activity that's repeated, a healthy one like meditating or having healthy attitude behaviors and relationships can save your life. If you have an activity that's repeated and the gene is constantly turned on it will help how that gene is housed. You can acquire a new genetic trait as an adult. That can even be inherited in the next generation. Hot area of genetics right now.
Our thoughts, feelings, emotions, social relations, sleep, activity, rest, exercise, experiencing the world, thinking, feeling all effecting the chemistry and genetic activity. If you meditate everyday you can thwart the aging process and elongate chromosomes. It has been scientifically proven.
After hearing this inspiring talk about how our behavior and lifestyle directly effects our cells and our aging process, I felt hopeful. Our choices effect our genetic code and that is very empowering. When I was chatting about this with my friend in the lobby of the Hilton after the session, I turned and the was Deepak Chopra and Dr. Ranzi and Marilyn Schlitz. They chatted with us about the panel. They were strolling in the lobby onto the next session. We bumped inito Deepak Chopra and for me that was a synchronicity.
There I was talking with Mr. Chopra and Dr. Tanzier about their talk, "What did you think?" they asked. "I feel hopeful that I can reprogram my genes based on my behavior and thoughts. I needed to hear that this week," I said because my mother just had heart and cancer and heart issues. Dr. Tanzi. a Professor of Neurology and holder of the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Endowed Chair in Neurology and Mental Retardation at Harvard University and a leading expert on Alzheimers was truly interested in our opinion. Deepak started writing an idea on his iPad as we told him our thoughts. This is the kind of connecting that happens at a Milken Institute Conference. It was right in my own backyard in Los Angeles.

On Aging and the coming wave of older populations:
America faces breathtaking opportunities disguised as disasters. Invest significantly in health win / win aging. Great opportunities, built by Del Webb inventing retirement as we know it. We were also older people who needed to leave the workforce. Being in limbo active and retired the American Dream meets limbo so now you have these social justice entrepreneurs that want their work to be an extension of their values.
